Sleep is a basic human function, but also an incredibly complex behaviour. The quality and quantity of sleep impacts a child’s health, wellbeing, learning and behaviour. The importance of supporting early sleep routines is highlighted in the National Quality Standard, “Each child’s wellbeing and comfort is provided for, including appropriate opportunities to meet each child’s need for sleep, rest and relaxation” (Quality Area 2, Element 2.1.1).
When caring for children, creating safe sleep environments and implementing safe sleep practices is vital.

When caring for children, ensuring a safe sleep environment is one way we can reduce the risk of harm occurring. SIDS/SUDI is one of the leading causes of death in infants. Therefore, creating a safe sleep environment is a vital responsibility for early learning educators.
There are a number of dedicated resources that are considered the authority on safe sleep practices in Australia. With the shared vision of closing the skills gap in the ECEC sector around safe sleep practices, the information provided in this course has been pulled from various resources and provided in one easy to access course.
