NSW Food Safety Supervisor Refresher

This Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) refresher course is for learners who already hold a NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate that is about to expire or has expired less than 90 days ago. If your certificate expired more than 90 days ago, this course is not appropriate for your circumstances, and you will need to complete a full NSW Food Safety Supervisor course.

Upon successful completion, you will receive a renewed NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate (the Blue and Orange Certificate) valid for five (5) years.

Pre-requisite unit(s) for this course are either SITXFSA001 and SITXFSA002 (SITSS00069) (Hospitality) OR SIRRFSA001 (Retail). Be sure to select the correct course below based on your original unit(s) completed.

NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificates have a validity period of five years from the date of issuance. To obtain a new certificate, you must renew your NSW FSS training. This course helps current or recently expired FSS certificate holders obtain re-certification.

Recognition of Unit(s)

Credit transfer pathway available for learners that provide the SITXFSA001 and SITXFSA002 units for verification to receive a Statement of Attainment for SITXFSA005 – Use Hygienic Practices for Food Safety & SITXFSA006 – Participate in Safe Food Handling Practices

No credit transfers are available for the SIRRFSA001 – Handle food safely in a retail environment unit. Learners who have this unit as a pre-requisite can still enrol into this refresher but will not receive a new Statement of Attainment for this unit upon successful completion.

  • SITXFSA001 and SITXFSA002 OR SIRRFSA001
  • Your original NSW Food Safety Supervisor Blue & Orange or Green and White Certificate

 

If you have completed your original units of competency more than five years ago, please do not enrol into this course. Please note that if you enrol into this course and your original units are more than 90 days past the original expiry, or you cannot provide proof of your original unit(s), we will not be able to provide a refund. 

At the beginning of your course, you will be required to upload your original Statement of Attainment, USI transcript showing your original unit(s), and your original NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate (often referred to as the ‘Green & White’ or ‘Blue & Orange’). These will be verified by the trainer before you will be able to progress with the rest of your course.

This is a Learning and Recognition pathway available only to students re-certifying their Food Safety Supervisor NSW certification.

This Recognition Pathway (Recognition of Prior Learning) for UoC, plus training and assessment involves the key focus areas of:

  • Allergen management
  • Cleaning & sanitising practices
  • Safe egg handling
  • Food act offences

Time

  • Online learning & assessment takes 3 – 4 hours (self-paced)
  • You have a total of 4 weeks to complete the course.
  • There are no refunds if you do not complete your course within this timeframe; however, 14-day enrolment extensions are available for a small fee. Enrolment extensions are available for up to 90 days from the original enrolment expiry. 

On successful completion, you receive:

NSW FSS Recertification pathway for Hospitality (SITXFSA001 & SITXFSA002), upon completion you will receive: 

  • Statement of Attainment SITSS00069
  • NSW FSS Certificate valid for 5 years  

 

For those completing the refresher course with the retail unit – SIRRFSA001, you will receive the NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate issued by the New South Wales Food Authority.

Please note, the NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificates are manually processed each week. Once these have been printed, your certificate will be sent to you in the mail via Australia Post.

How Does it Work?

To complete this course, you need:

A unique email address: This email address cannot be used by another student as it becomes your unique login username.

Identification: You must have valid photo identification (must not be expired more than 3 months). Acceptable photo identification can include: Passport photo page, driver’s license, Key Pass, Photo Card, and student photo ID card (must include date of birth).

Once you log in to the system, you will be prompted to upload a copy of your photo identification.

Unique Student Identifier (USI): Everyone that completes an accredited course (such as an RSA) is classified as a ‘student’ and needs to create a USI. This is a government requirement, and you will not receive your Statement of Attainment until your USI has been received.

If you have difficulties creating a USI number, please visit https://www.usi.gov.au/help or phone Skilling Australia 1300 857 536 who can assist further.  

Clear to Work does not issue USI numbers and cannot assist in creating them or obtaining lost USI numbers.

Assessment

This is a Recognition of Prior Learning pathway available only to students re-certifying their Food Safety Supervisor NSW certification.

This Recognition Pathway (Recognition of Prior Learning) involves training and assessment in the key focus areas of:

  • Safe egg handling
  • Allergen management
  • Cleaning and sanitising practices
  • Food act offences

You will be assessed using multiple-choice questions based on case studies provided in the course.  

You will also be asked to provide proof of your original units of competency in your course by uploading copies of your original Statements of Attainment and Blue and Orange Certificate. 

Multiple-Choice Questions

There are a number of sections in this course. At the end of each section is an assessment. You are required to study each section in sequence and answer every question correctly to move onto the next section.

Once I successfully complete my course, how long will it take to get my NSW Food Safety Supervisor ‘Blue & Orange’ Certificate? 

The Blue & Orange certificate issued by New South Wales Food Authority are processed manually in batches several times per week. Once your certificate has been printed, it will be sent to you in the mail via Australia Post. 

NSW FSS certificates expire five years from the date of issue. Stay compliant and up to date with the latest NSW food safety practices by completing NSW FSS refresher (recertification) training. When an FSS holder’s certification expires, food businesses have 30 days to ensure compliance by either:

  • ensuring the person with the expired FSS completes a recertification course within 30 working days, or
  • ensuring another eligible staff member with a current qualification is appointed as the FSS.

Frequently Asked Questions

From the date and time of enrolment, you have four (4) weeks to complete your course in its entirety. This includes assessment marking and any potential resubmission if required. 

14-day enrolment extensions are available for a small fee. 

This course is valid in NSW. 

If your course enrolment has expired, you can purchase a 14-day enrolment extension for a small fee as long as you are within 90 days of your original course enrolment expiry. 

There is no limit on the number of attempts to complete your assessments. 

Please also know that trainers are available at any time throughout your course to provide assistance should you need additional guidance and support. 

On December 8, 2023, new legislation came into effect which requires all Australian businesses that prepare and serve food to have trained Food Safety Supervisors available on their premises at all times. The Standard 3.2.2A is part of the Food Standards Code administered by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ).

Please make sure you only provide your employer with your blue and orange NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate, not your Statement of Attainment.  

You must successfully complete all components of your learning and assessment, have your photo ID verified, and provide your USI before we can process your Statement of Attainment and your Victorian Certificate of Completion.

The Blue and Orange certificate issued by New South Wales Food Authority are processed manually several times per week. You will receive a soft copy of your NSW Food Safety Supervisor ‘Blue & Orange’ Certificate via email. A hard copy will be sent to you in the mail via Australia Post. It takes five to seven business days for these to arrive.
